More great info!Understanding the CJS Scoring System in Compete USA CompetitionsWhat Coaches, Parents, and Skaters Need to Know for the New Era of JudgingBeginning July 1, U.S. Figure Skating Compete USA competitions will begin using the Component Judging System (CJS) rather than the traditional 6.0 majority judging system that has been used at entry-level events for decades. This change represents an important step toward aligning grassroots competitions with the scoring philosophy used throughout the rest of the sport. For coaches and parents who grew up with the familiar 6.0 scores, the shift may seem confusing at first. But in reality, CJS is designed to give clearer feedback, more transparency, and a more developmental pathway for young skaters.Let’s break it down. From the 6.0 System to CJSFor many years, Compete USA events used the 6.0 judging system, where judges assigned marks and then ranked skaters relative to each other. The system was based on placement rather than a detailed point total. Under that model:• Judges gave two marks (technical merit and presentation).• Placements were determined by a majority ranking system.• The marks themselves did not represent actual point values. While the 6.0 system is simple and easy for beginners to understand, it provides limited detail about why one skater placed ahead of another. That is where CJS comes in.What Is the Component Judging System (CJS)?The Component Judging System (CJS) is a simplified judging format derived from the International Judging System (IJS) used in national and international competitions.Instead of ranking skaters against each other, CJS evaluates each performance independently using points. The score generally includes two main parts:1. Technical ElementsJudges evaluate how well a skater performs required elements such as:• Jumps• Spins• Turns and step sequencesIn higher-level competitions, each element has a base value and a Grade of Execution (GOE) that reflects how well it was performed. Compete USA events use a simplified approach, but the concept is similar:Judges reward clean, well-executed elements.2. Program ComponentsIn addition to elements, judges evaluate the overall quality of the performance, including areas such as:• Skating skills• Performance and presentation• Composition and choreographyThese components measure how well the program is skated, not just what elements are included. Why U.S. Figure Skating Is Introducing CJS at Compete USAThis change is part of a broader effort by U.S. Figure Skating to create a clearer developmental pipeline for skaters. The benefits include:Better FeedbackInstead of simply seeing placement and two marks, skaters receive more detailed scoring information. This helps coaches answer questions like:• Was the jump under-rotated?• Did the spin lack speed or centering?• Was the program well presented?Consistency With Higher LevelsMost competitions above the basic levels already use IJS scoring, which is based on cumulative points rather than relative ranking. Introducing CJS earlier allows young skaters to:• Learn how modern judging works• Understand scoring before reaching higher levels• Transition smoothly into Excel, Well-Balanced, and qualifying competitionsEncouraging Skill DevelopmentBecause elements are evaluated individually, skaters learn that:• Clean technique matters• Quality earns points• Execution is as important as difficultyWhat Will Change at Compete USA Competitions? For most skaters and families, the competition experience will still feel very familiar. However, there will be some noticeable differences.Score ReportingInstead of two 6.0 marks, results will typically show:• Element scores• Component scores• Total point scoreMore Detailed ProtocolsSkaters may receive score sheets that indicate:• How well each element was performed• The judges’ evaluation of presentation and skating qualityThis information can be extremely valuable for post-competition analysis and training goals. What Will Stay the SameEven with the new judging format, the heart of Compete USA remains unchanged.Competitions will still emphasize:• Fun and positive first experiences• Development of basic skating skills• A welcoming environment for new competitorsFor many young skaters, Compete USA events are their first introduction to performing under pressure, and the new system simply provides a more modern way to evaluate those performances. The Big PictureThe introduction of the Component Judging System at Compete USA competitions represents a natural evolution in figure skating.By gradually introducing point-based scoring at the grassroots level, U.S. Figure Skating is helping young athletes learn:• how the sport is judged today• what judges are actually looking for• how to improve from one competition to the nextIn short, CJS helps transform competitions from simply “who won?” into “how can each skater get better?”And that is exactly what the early stages of competitive skating should be about. ...
